Understanding the Procedure

What Is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a highly refined procedure in which the clouded natural lens inside your eye is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). By restoring your eye’s ability to focus light accurately, the procedure sharpens vision, improves contrast, and brings color back to life.

You may be a candidate if you are experiencing any of these common cataract symptoms:

  • Glare Difficulty with bright lights and night driving
  • Blurred Vision Cloudiness that does not clear up
  • Dulled Colors Colors appear washed out or yellowed
  • Halos Halos or starbursts around lights at night

Your intraocular lens stays clear for life and never develops cataracts again. Premium IOL options can also reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses for distance, reading, or both.

"Erica Liu MD and her staff were welcoming, professional, helpful, thorough and kind. After wearing eye glasses for 25 years, I wanted to know my options. Erica presented options and the one that suited me best was RLE. It was one of the best decisions I ever made! The recovery only took one day and I now have 20/20 vision in each eye. It has been life changing for me."

"Love the whole Beach Cities Laser Vision team! I did my SMILE operation April of 2025 before I graduated from Oxford with my master's, and my life has been totally changed. Thank you Dr. Liu, Katie, and Lawrence for a wonderful personalized approach to my eyes. I am from Palos Verdes (Rolling Hills), and I'm so glad we have this office and this team right in the South Bay!"

"Dr. Liu along with her staff Katie and Lawrence is very friendly and made me comfortable throughout the process. During the consultation the procedure I wanted to do was LASIK, but Dr. Liu recommended I'd be better off with SMILE and explained the difference between the two. Best decision. Faster recovery and now I can see so much better, 20/20 vision. It totally changed my life."

Common Questions

Cataract Surgery Questions, Answered

Here is what most patients want to know before their first consultation. If your question is not here, give us a call.

Is cataract surgery painful?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort. Dr. Liu uses numbing drops to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure, which typically takes just 15 to 30 minutes. A protective shield is placed over your eye when you leave, and any mild sensation as you heal can be managed with prescribed drops.

What symptoms indicate that cataracts are progressing?

Cataracts often cause worsening glare, difficulty reading in dim light, dulled or yellowed colors, and increased difficulty with night driving. If you find yourself struggling to do things you used to do easily — especially in low light — it is worth scheduling an evaluation with Dr. Liu.

Will I need glasses after cataract surgery?

It depends on the lens you choose. Monofocal IOLs deliver excellent clarity at a single focal point (typically distance), so reading glasses are often still helpful. Premium multifocal IOLs are designed to support vision at multiple distances and can dramatically reduce dependence on glasses for most daily activities.

Can cataract surgery correct astigmatism?

Yes. Toric IOLs and select premium lenses are specifically designed to correct astigmatism at the same time your cataracts are treated, so you get clearer vision and reduced reliance on glasses in a single procedure.

How long will my artificial lens last?

Your intraocular lens is designed to remain stable and clear for the rest of your life. Unlike your natural lens, IOLs do not cloud or develop cataracts, so once you have cataract surgery, it does not need to be redone.

When can I return to work?

Many patients return to work within a few days, depending on their visual needs and comfort level. Dr. Liu will give you specific guidance on when to resume work, exercise, and swimming based on how your healing is progressing.

Can both eyes be treated on the same day?

In some cases, yes. Dr. Liu will determine whether same-day treatment is appropriate during your evaluation. Many patients have one eye treated first, then the second eye a week or two later, so they always have one good eye to rely on during recovery.

How much does cataract surgery cost at Beach Cities Laser Vision?

Cost varies based on the IOL you choose and the specifics of your treatment plan. Because Beach Cities Laser Vision is a cash-pay practice, your lens recommendations are guided entirely by your visual priorities — not by what insurance will or will not cover. A transparent, personalized quote is provided after your evaluation. Financing is available through ALPHAEON Credit.
