Understanding the Procedure

What Is PRK Eye Surgery?

PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is an outpatient laser vision correction procedure. Dr. Liu gently removes the outer layer of your cornea and uses a laser to reshape the tissue underneath, so light focuses correctly on your retina. A protective contact lens is placed afterward to support healing.

PRK is FDA-approved to treat the most common refractive errors:

  • Myopia Nearsightedness
  • Hyperopia Farsightedness
  • Astigmatism Irregular cornea shape

PRK does not create a corneal flap, which makes it the right choice for patients with thin or irregular corneas, chronic dry eye, or active lifestyles where flap-related complications would be a concern.

"Erica Liu MD and her staff were welcoming, professional, helpful, thorough and kind. After wearing eye glasses for 25 years, I wanted to know my options. Erica presented options and the one that suited me best was RLE. It was one of the best decisions I ever made! The recovery only took one day and I now have 20/20 vision in each eye. It has been life changing for me."

"Love the whole Beach Cities Laser Vision team! I did my SMILE operation April of 2025 before I graduated from Oxford with my master's, and my life has been totally changed. Thank you Dr. Liu, Katie, and Lawrence for a wonderful personalized approach to my eyes. I am from Palos Verdes (Rolling Hills), and I'm so glad we have this office and this team right in the South Bay!"

"Dr. Liu along with her staff Katie and Lawrence is very friendly and made me comfortable throughout the process. During the consultation the procedure I wanted to do was LASIK, but Dr. Liu recommended I'd be better off with SMILE and explained the difference between the two. Best decision. Faster recovery and now I can see so much better, 20/20 vision. It totally changed my life."

Common Questions

PRK Questions, Answered

Here is what most patients want to know before their first consultation. If your question is not here, give us a call.

Is PRK painful?

No. Dr. Liu will numb your eyes with anesthetic drops before the procedure, so you should not experience pain during surgery itself. If you have any discomfort as you heal, it can be managed with prescription eye drops or over-the-counter pain relievers.

How is PRK different from LASIK?

Unlike LASIK, PRK does not create a corneal flap. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea is gently removed, and it regenerates over time. PRK is often recommended for patients with thin corneas or dry eyes, and it eliminates any risk of flap-related complications — though recovery is slower than LASIK.

What is the recovery like?

The initial recovery period lasts a few days. You will need someone to drive you home after surgery, and you may want to take a few days off from work as you heal. A protective bandage contact lens stays in place for several days — Dr. Liu will remove it once the surface of your eye has healed. Vision is noticeably better within three to five days, and final results are typically apparent within about three months.

Who is a good candidate for PRK?

PRK is ideal for individuals with thin corneas, chronic dry eye, or anyone who may not be a candidate for LASIK. In general, you need to be 18 or older, have healthy corneas, and have had a stable prescription for at least one year. Dr. Liu will confirm candidacy during your free consultation.

Are there any risks or side effects with PRK?

PRK is generally very safe — Dr. Liu herself had PRK many years ago. Potential side effects can include temporary discomfort, dry eyes, and hazy vision during recovery. Because there is no corneal flap, there is no risk of flap-related complications. Your free consultation includes a complete evaluation to confirm you are a strong candidate before any procedure is scheduled.

Do I need to stop wearing contacts before surgery?

Yes. Contact lenses can temporarily change the shape of your cornea, which would affect the precision of your measurements. You will need to stop wearing contacts 3 days prior to your assessment and 1 day prior to surgery.

How much does PRK cost at Beach Cities Laser Vision?

Our all-in price is transparent and includes the full procedure and every follow-up visit. We offer 0% financing through ALPHAEON Credit so you can spread the cost over manageable monthly payments. The exact price is shared during your free consultation once we confirm you are a candidate.

What if I'm not a candidate for PRK?

You still have excellent options. Dr. Liu also performs LASIK, SMILE, EVO ICL, RLE, and cataract surgery. During your consultation, we will walk you through every procedure that fits your eyes — with no pressure to choose any specific option.
